Industrial Fire
Sun. Jan 17th 2010

At approximately 2:30 p.m. Co. 31 was dispatched on the box 3103 for a smoke investigation at Rex Heat Treat plant at  the Bedford County Industrial Park.  31-12, 31-11, and 31-50 all responded under the initial command of 31 Deputy.  Just prior to entering the Industrial Park heavy black smoke was seen issuing from the building.  Upon seeing this Deputy asked for a second alarm.  Second alarm brought Co. 32 (Everett), Co. 38 (Alum Bank), and Co. 37 (Shawnee Valley) to the scene.  Crews from 31-12 forced a door on side C of the building and began a search for the source of the fire.  Assisted with a Thermal Imaging camera, crews found the fire but reported that water only made the fire worse.  At this time 31 Chief arrived on scene and assumed command, making Deputy the Operations chief.  It was determined at this time that Class B foam was needed to extinguish the fire, as the fire was in an oven that had a 1500 gal. oil tank.  At this time command asked that the Bedford County foam task force be dispatched to bring additional foam to the fire.  Upon switching to foam operations crews advanced to the fire and were able to extinguish it.  Approximately 40 gals of foam were needed to extinguish the fire.  Do to the size of the building, it took several hours to clear the building of smoke.  State Police fire marshals were requested to come to the scene to investigate and determine the cause.  1 firefighter sustained a minor injury during the incident and was transported to UPMC Bedford hospital for treatment.

Co. 31 would like to thank all of it's members along with all the mutual aid depts. that assisted at this incident for a job well done.
