Becoming a Member Print this page
The Bedford Fire Department is always looking for new members. If you are interested in becoming a member, you may pick up an application at our fire station on 244 West Penn Street. There are a few requirements that you must meet in order to become a member. They are as follows:
Be 18 years old
Lived at your current address for at least 6 months
Live within 3 road miles of the fire station
Upon completion of your application it will then be sent to the Pennsylvania State Police for a criminal background check. Once your application comes back, the fire dept. investigating committee will then review your application. If everything is in order, you will then be notified by a member of the fire dept. to come up and get gear. All gear and equipment will be provided for you, at no cost.
If you have previous fire fighter training and have your certificates to prove it, you will be placed on probation for 6 months. If you have no fire fighting training, you will be placed on probation for 1 year. Within the 1 year probation period you will be required to attend a Basic Fire Fighting class and at least a Basic First Aid class.
You will also be required to attend at least 4 business meetings (first Thursday of every month), attend 35 total activities (fire calls, work sessions, training, fund raising events), and at least 3 nights of our annual door to door fund drive.
After your probation period is up, the Dept. will vote on making you a full and active member of the fire dept. Upon becoming an active member you will then be allowed to vote at business meetings.
As mentioned before, the Bedford Fire Dept. is always looking for new members. If you think you are interested, please stop by and see us.
